Maria through in Madrid

Maria is through to the second round of Mutua Madrid Open in Madrid after she defeated Irina-Camelia Begu of Romania 6-0 6-3 in 61 minutes.

The first set took only 21 minutes as Maria didn’t drop a game. The second set was closer, Maria broke to lead 4-2 and that was the one break she needed as she took the set 6-3.

After the match, Maria talked about the playing on blue clay for the first time. “ The blue clay is obviously different, visually. When you play on red clay for so many years you get used it, but as tennis players we’re always adjusting to different things and different conditions, so it’s what it is. There are some parts of the courts that maybe have a little more clay than other parts, but it’s just first year, so i’m sure they’re still working kind out”

In the second round, Maria will play Klara Zakopalova of the Republic Czech. Maria has played twice before & the series tied 1-1.

Australian Open 2003 R1 : Zakopalova won 6-4 7-6
Wimbledon 2011 R3 : Maria won 6-2 6-3
