Classification of Foodborne Illness



      INFECTION
·        Ingestion harmful microorganism within a food
·        Caused when a living microorganism is ingested as part of a food.
·        Example : Salmonella spp.

Salmonella

     INTOXICATION
·        Ingestion harmful toxin produced within a food.
·        Caused when a living microorganism grows in or on a food and produce toxin.
·        Example : Clostridium Botulinum & Staphylococcus.

        TOXICO-INFECTION
·        Ingestion harmful microorganism within a food that produce toxin in the human body.
·        Caused when a living microorganism is consumed ( like infection ).
·        Example : Clostridium Perfringens
