Maria is into her first Roland Garros
final after she defeated no.4 seed Petra Kvitova of the Republic Czech 6-3 6-3
in 1 hour 17 minutes. When the new WTA rankings are released on Monday, Maria
will return to NO.1 – the first time since June 2008.
This is Maria’s third appearance in a
final in the last four Grand Slam.
Maria broke Kvitova to love to lead
3-2 in the first set. At 5-3 40-0 on Kvitova serve, Maria won the set when
Kvitova hit a ball wide.
In the second set, Maria broke Kvitova
to lead 3-1 when Kvitova double-faulted. Kvitova got the break back in the next
game and then won her own service game to level the set 3-3. Maria won the next
two games and at 5-3 40-15, Maria hit a second aces down the line to advance to
the final.
In Saturday’s final, Maria will play
No.21 seed, Sara Errani of Italy. Maria has never played the 25-years-old
before who is playing her first Grand Slam final.
